Okay we've established what KDM looks like but has anyone ever seen a pic of
Monique Froese?

I think this has been brought up before but I don't think there was a
definitive answer.

It would also be interesting to find out what her inspiration was for the
various covers she worked on i.e whether Edgar would say the album is going
to be called "XYZ" and she went off and did or did she actually her the
music and have that as a source of inspiration?

She is interviewed and also appears elsewhere in the TV documentary
'Signale aus der Schwaebischen Strasse'.

In above mentioned TV documentary, she discusses the cover for 'Ricochet'.
Apparently she came with her own ideas, and the band would have their
opinion, approve it or won't. In case of Ricochet, Monique first wanted to
photograph patch cord plugs over a mirror. But the band thought that looked
too aggressive, and wouldn't comply with their band philosophy. It was
Peter
Bauman then who suggested the photograph with the trees against the
sun 'bouncing off' a tree trunk. It was taken during a France trip. So,
in this
case, the cover idea was Peter's but the photograph actually taken by
Monique.

Hallo Marc,

Armin was faster than me! Nevertheless read my translation of the
interview.

Andreas-Michael

Displayed quotation:

"It takes ages until the group accepts an album cover." Monika Froese

Introduction:
Since years Monika Froese, the wife of Edgar Froese, takes the
photographs for the album covers of Tangerine Dream. A awkward task
considering that a picture, a photograph, joins the listener in a
mood that is to be experienced not until the music. Is there quarrel
sometimes?

Monika: No quarrel, but, say, differences have been with the
recent "Ricochet". It's this one (she takes the album from a pile of
albums). There we put such sort of stereo jacks that the group uses
at their equipment in different formations onto a mirror and took
photographs. The group said "well, that looks much too aggressive,
that looks like cannonballs".
We were on a tour in France. We had free time, and among other
photographs I took this one (the camera shows the cover of
Ricochet). Peter saw it and said "we rather take this one, this fits
our music better than those plugs".

Interviewer: The picture of Ricochet: Peter is not here, but when
you say that it fits our music more: There are torn off trees, it's
a bit as if the big nuclear bomb has already been dropped. I mean,
it doesn't look nice.

Monika: You don't like it (she laughs)?

Interviewer: Well, I mean, not nice in an esthetic sense. It's a
very destroyed scenery.

Monika: (ernest) The scenery wasn't destroyed at all. There was a
huge stage/dune [comment: the German word is either Bühne (stage)
or
Düne (dune)] near the ocean, and then this sunset. And "Ricochet"
means impact. In tennis, for example, it's the impact of the ball.
The moment when the ball hits the ground and bounces off. That's the
same in the French language and in the English language. And due to
the optical impact of the sun at the tree the name "Ricochet" has
been choosen.

Interviewer: Relatively seldom the group is shown onto the covers.

Monika: Yes, that's right.

Interviewer: Why?

Monika: They did it intentionally because they don't like this sort
of stardom. It's not their thing to emphasize a person. They made an
exception with "Ricochet", however. They have choosen pictures that
I took of them and have put them onto the cover.

Interviewer: Is it difficult to agree with them?

Monika: What is concerning their personal photos it is very
difficult.

Interviewer: Because they are vain or what?

Monika: Yes. Vain, very vain. (she laughs)

Thanks

Armin and Andreas-Michael,

Guess that answers my question :-)

Though maybe we should ask why she stopped doing them given some of the umm
poor efforts in recent times :-)

I was fortunate to meet Monique along with the four band members after the 1978 gig at the Glasgow Apollo. She was absolutely gorgeous, and I couldn't help
wondering why she was hitched to a bombed out wreck like Edgar!! (well, he was pretty knackered at the time!)

whether they have been shown in an exhibition?

Hallo Glen,

both is right. ;-)

If her name would be "Monique", then this French name would be
pronounced "mon-eek". Her real name "Monika" is said like the
English equivalent "Monica" - with the slight difference that you
Englishmen cannot spell the German 'o'. ;-)
I searched my dictionary up and down, but no English word is
pronounced accordingly. Actually you know the German 'o' from the
title "Autobahn" of some EM group that is not to be named here. ;-)

Hallo Glen,

Monika and Monique are two different names.
The name of Edgar's wife is Monika.
Her pseudonym is Monique.
"Monika" is pronounced like the English "Monica" with the slight

Sorry, I don't find an easier explanation.

True, but since they won't be able to pronounce that ;-), they could
use the word "toe" or "Moe" instead, which is close enough.

So "Moe-Neek" would be 98% correct...

Try the first 'o' in the word motor.

Isn't it true that Johannes Schmoelling had to change the spelling of his name so that the English speaking community could cope with it's pronunciation? I think it was originally spelt Schmolling.

No Johannes' name is spelled Schmölling! With the German umlaut "Ö"
which could also be written as "OE" and should be pronounced like the
"o" in world.
